Trust the chefs at Tiong Bahru Bakery to turn out yet another round of edible surprises. Purists will most certainly shake their heads at the idea of savoury croissants beyond the realm of ham and cheese, but for the rest of us who really don't mind a good flavour shake-up done well — ready your forks.
Tiong Bahru Bakery's new array of savoury croissants are proof that a breakfast staple can carry well over into lunch and beyond. For one, the classic crescent-shaped croissant has been modified to cradle a variety of ingredients, ranging from a minced pork filling reminiscent of those you'll find in xiao long baos to a piquant pork sausage paired with caramelised onion jam and a slight hint of miso dressing. Then there is the Japanese-inspired croissant featuring a ramen egg (which was unfortunately a little too cooked to retain the quintessential molten centre), bonito flakes, a touch of mayonnaise, and a sprinkle of spicy togarashi to pull together all the flavours of this umami bomb. If you prefer seafood, opt for the croissant that packs in salmon, spinach, ricotta, and of course — crème fraiche to finish.
Available from 1130am to 3pm daily at all Tiong Bahru Bakery outlets.
