Dressing for Coachella: 5 festival outfits to take on in Indio
No longer just a global congregation in appreciation of stellar acts, Coachella has also become a fashion fest to parade your closet's best threads. Hardly a music puritst? Then it won't hurt to spare your ensembles some thought — six days spent in the Colorado desert (Indio, California) with style influencers can diminish even the most robust of self-esteems. If Coachella has yet to be ticked off your bucket list, think of it as a test run for when the time comes.
1. Boho Betty
With a soft spot for fringe and more multi-coloured fringe, Indio is her playground and she's going all out. Paisley, crochet and tribal prints... you name it, she'll be decked in it.
Dress the part: Why go for a pair of denim shorts and a fringed vest when you can do so much more? Pick a pair of monochrome trousers like this one from Sacai, and then go all out in Chloé and Mabu by Maria BK's bohemian best.
Clockwise: Rosie Assoulin Morris asymmetrical top; Saint Laurent crystal and glass ring; Sacai voile wide-leg pants; Mabu by Maria BK embellished sandal; Chloé Hudson tassel leather shoulder bag; Saint Laurent burnised gold-tone earrings
2. Hipster Henry
Living in skin tight jeans and subversive prints, Hedi Slimane is first and foremost this guy's idol. With enough pints to get the mood going, he might just let slip to having Matthew Healy of The 1975 also on that list.
Dress the part: Do jeans even come unripped these days? Hipster Henry has forsaken whole denim since Chvrches made it big. In line with keeping a lean silhouette, go for tapered cut-offs and a lashing of palm tree prints. Finish with a navy bandana tied snugly on the crown.
Clockwise: Alexander McQueen cotton bandana; Valentino camouflage-print pouch; H&M denim bermudas; Garrett Leight Paloma round frame sunglasses; Saint Laurent panelled leather sneakers; Our Legacy poplin shirt
3. Going glamping
The glamper is up for doing the full monty — yes, that includes setting up tent. She'll tell you that it's the only way to truly experience Coachella. Stylish yet practical, it won't take long to spot the glamper amongst the actual T-shirt clad campers.
Dress the part: Light wash denim, lace-up boots and a fuss-free top with a beauty kit at bay. This one from Charlotte Tilbury will keep the Kardashian contours in place.
Clockwise: Maison Rabih Kayrouz off-the-shoulder top; Illesteva Leonard mirrored sunglassses; Muveil embellished boyfriend jeans; Charlotte Tilbury festival essentials set; Balmain combat boots; Natasha Zinko pom-pom trim straw hat; Elizabeth and James Cynnie sling croc-effect backpack
4. Fresh off the boat
Still in college and kicking off spring break, they travel in packs of bros and are generally up for anything. Their uniform consists of pressed bermudas and preppy polo T-shirts.
Dress the part: Keeping it simple is key. Let James Bay do James Bay and stick to a tried-and-tested formula here. With tailored bermudas, sneakers and a nondescript cap, pick an all-over printed T-shirt to tie it all together.
Clockwise: Shinola Runwell leather backpack; Gucci floral-print T-shirt; Incotex linen and cotton blend shorts; Adidas Originals Court Vantage sneakers; Persol round frame sunglasses; Ebbets cotton cap
5. Down and dirty
Known as the — increasingly endangered — music devotee who's there for the tunes and purely the tunes. Permanently pressed up against the stage barricades, don't waste your time trying to pry her away from Disclosure on deck. A mid-riff baring Jenner has nothing on them.
Dress the part: Have your arms up in the air like you just don't care — a belt bag from Chloé will make sure of that. Pair with pre-distressed ankle boots (they'll get scuffed up anyway) and an easy kaftan for when the temperature cools.
Clockwise: Chloé Georgia convertible leather belt bag; Ermanno Gallamini lace cape; Fendi cat-eye glasses; Golden Goose Brielle boots; Alexander Wang destroyed denim shorts; Lanvin snake ring; Etro crochet trimmed jacquard top
