Nothing basic

10 unexpected ways to up your summer sartorial game

While the other side of the world is wrapped up in swaths of layers trying to battle the cold, here in Singapore we are blessed with warm weather all year round — albeit it being blazing hot at times. But lucky for us, we can jump right in and start donning the latest threads. Here are 10 spring/summer 2017 trends for a much-needed wardrobe refresh. Scroll down to find out how you can push the envelope in both bold and subtle ways.

1. HEART MOTIFS
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, the best way to profess your love for another (or even yourself) is not to wear your heart on your sleeve, but on your chest.

2. SILK ROBES
Who doesn't appreciate another fashionable pass to wear their bedroom attire out of the house? Plus, these days everything needs to be double duty to cater to our busy schedules.

3. SQUARE SUITS
Have you been racking your brain thinking about how you can stand out during boardroom meetings? Make square suits your next office wear investment. Think: Exaggerated proportions. The wider the better, allowing you to flex your authority.

4. GRANDPA SWEATER VESTS
If you've only been raiding your grandmother's wardrobe for the good stuff, it's time to turn your eye on grandpa's stash — even if it means having to literally take his sweater off him right there and then.

5. FOLDOVER WAISTLINES
Give your belts a rest this season and introduce the foldover waistline instead. Preferably one with piping à la Diane von Furstenberg for that much needed accent. Oh, and did we mention how it works in favour of those looking to cover up a heavy post-lunch bump?

6. CARGO POCKETS
Spring/summer 2017 saw a wave of utilitarian and militaria garments. The most prominent and practical? Cargo pockets. While it may be a common detail used in the greater outdoors, who's to say it can't come in handy when tackling the concrete jungle we live in.

7. LEGGINGS
Skinny jeans make way for leggings this season. If there is anything we learnt from the runways, is that black is not an option. Sequins, metallic or lace are what you need to be looking for.

8. SLEEVE SLITS
For those who have the intention of cutting loose from the Vetements grip, this trend is made for you. Forget extra long sleeves. This season, wear them slit from the armhole right down to the cuffs. Whether zipped, buttoned or simply sliced open, the choices are aplenty.

9. SPORTS JERSEY
If you're in search of a way to connect with your partner on a sports level, this might just be the answer. Like the saying goes: If you can't beat them, join them — at least fashionably, that is.

10. WIND BREAKERS
Come rain or shine, windbreakers or sheeters are the ideal outwear for our climate. Light enough for hot days and practical for wet ones, especially if you're anti-umbrella.
