Youth revisited

The Marc Jacobs and Julie Verhoeven collaboration is the cutest thing you'll see this week
Marc Jacob's dark side meets Julie Verhoeven's unorthodox quirk for an explosive collaboration

There are two Marc Jacobs we know of: The fall/winter Marc Jacobs (a master of the moody, the godfather of ska funk) and the spring/summer Marc Jacobs — his happier, seasonably lighter alter ego, one who joins forces with the likes of good friend, fashion illustrator Julie Verhoeven.

Verhoeven, who first began her creative journey post-fashion school as the assistant to John Galliano, is a celebrated artist and seasoned fashion collaborator not unfamiliar to big names like Louis Vuitton, Peter Jensen and Mulberry. She's done it all, from pretty to fey to the NSFW, but her work has always been, in one way or another, a derivation of pop culture.

Never mind the (controversial) colourful dreadlocks or even the jaw-dropping 8-inch platform heels, the real limelight from the Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2017 show should go to Verhoeven's sparkle and snakeskin, aiding and abetting Jacob's punk persuasion. She takes on the season of patchworks with her modern cartoon appliqués of psychedelic nature — monster rocket ship, upside down tighty whities, rainbow teeth, and what we think is an expressive egg with a mohawk, are just some of the many eclectic members of the band.
