In the pre-iPhone era of fashion, Polaroid was the favourite go-to for magazines and casting agents to snap models on their go-sees for its instant utility — and now, it's having its moment again, bigger than it was before. Not sold? Just scroll through Bella Hadid's recent Tokyo trip, documented with three in-the-moment Polaroid pictures, or the Wang Squad campaign capturing the likes of Hanne Gaby Odiele and Binx Walton, to CL and Travis Scott hazily flattered within its quintessential white borders.
Having always been ahead of the curve, Michael Kors takes note of the trend and teams up with camera forerunner Fujifilm for an exclusive Instax Mini 70. Swathed in metallic gold, the limited-edition camera is given Kors' stamp of approval with the namesake powerhouse's logo printed on the front, and the designer's signature on the camera door. With supermodels as close confidants and a string of parties livened up, Kors knows the importance of the ultimate selfie — which explains the Instax's unique selfie mode: Lens are adjustable to focus as close as 11 inches for sharper results (of duck pouts), and if an arm's length isn't long enough for a complete wefie, a tripod mount on the bottom can be attached to a selfie stick.
The tangible counterpart to Instagram's digitised squares, Michael Kors certifies the rise of instant film, "With the popularity of Instagram, there's been this huge resurgence lately of film — and I love that. Using instant photography has always been such an integral part of my creative process, whether it's snapping photos of looks in preparation for the shows or taking behind-the-scenes shots. Now we use the Instax Mini everywhere from the runway, to the office, to everyday life. It provides the perfect combination of timeless photos with fast-paced glamour and modern technology."
The collaboration was directly inspired by Michael Kors' latest addition to his handbag range, the Scout crossbody. Emulating vintage camera bags, the retro Scout is crafted from smooth leather in shades of walnut, black and cherry. If you're worried about getting scratches on your brand new Instax Mini 70, this arm candy is the plush home it needs. How's that for fashion-forward meta?
Michael Kors x Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 camera launches in Michael Kors boutiques on 27 October.
