Mention the name 'Hermès' and the words 'craftsmanship', 'quality' and, inexorably, 'leather' spring to mind. This is because, for more than 175 years, the French house has created a legacy of crafting unparalleled products from this fine material. I know what you're thinking: Thank you Captain Obvious.
But here's the exciting news: In celebration of this heritage, Hermès welcomes the Leather Forever exhibition to Singapore from 25 October to 13 December at the ArtScience Museum — an interractive journey that explores the maison's relationship with leather through both old and new creations. From Hermès craftsmen (flown in from Paris) to demonstrate their arcane craft, to bespoke leather creations such as a magical winged saddle, this is an exhibition not to be missed. The best part? Admission is free. Score. And make sure you check out the five Kellydoll bags made especially to commemorate Singapore's 50 years of independence.
If that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, an extract of artifacts from the Emile Hermès Museum — a private collection of objects housed above the Paris flagship store on Faubourg Saint-Honoré — will be shown to the Singapore public for the first time as a special prelude to Leather Forever.
Housed in a purpose-built showroom outside the historic Asian Civilisations Museum, this aptly named, Little Room Of Wanders, is a treasure trove of family heirlooms. Having had the pleasure (and privilege) of visiting this museum last year let me tell you that this is a treat. Think: A whisky flask that masquerades as a camera, a walking stick that transforms into a parasol and, a personal favourite, an intricately handmade Le Nécessaire box full of daily trinkets, gadgets and objects created for officials going off to war.
Why visit a room full of heirlooms? People, this room of artifacts has given birth to countless Hermès creations — yes, including that Collier de Chien bracelet you're wearing — serving as a constant fount of inspiration to designers the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, Martin Margiela, Véronique Nichanian and Christophe Lemaire. Case in point: I bumped into a rather affable Pierre Hardy on my last visit, piecing together his latest jewellery collection for Hermès. #Truestory
