If you've noticed the building tucked between Robinsons The Heeren and Knightsbridge on Orchard Road recently, then you'd have had a peek at Christian Dada's embroidered leathers flanking the expansive glass windows. Housed within a modest and nondescript space known only as 268 Orchard Road, the newly opened flagship store marks a milestone for designer and founder Masanori Morikawa — one of Japan's rising talents to keep an eye out for.
Just like Morikawa's brand DNA of time-honoured embroidery coupled with influences from youth subcultures, Christian Dada's first standalone boutique outside of Japan pays homage to tradition despite its contemporary veneer. Layed out like a Japanese karasansui (landscape) garden, metal 'rocks' dot the 1,700 square foot boutique, bordered by origami structures (see above) — one housing its fitting room with a fully mirrored interior for an optimal shopping experience. Stocked with the brand's fall/winter 2016 collection — 'Love on the Left Eye' — featuring a collaboration with artist Araki Nobuyoshi, trust Morikawa to turn Nobuyoshi's bondage imagery into an utterly desirable street-infused offering.
And just like his work, the store — inspired by Morikawa's travels to the island of Naoshima — is not the first time the rock and rebel designer's been enchanted by the beauty of nature. After all, it's his ability to compose a melange of the badass and romantic, delicate and controversial, that places him as one of Japan's most promising young designers.
Christian Dada is located at 268 Orchard Road, #01-02, Singapore 238856.
