Christian Dada's spring/summer 2017 collection is an ode to world peace
Word on the street
If you've been following the short but rousing career of designer Masanori Morikawa, then you'll know that he's a romantic under that rebellious veneer. Whether it's dedicating a collection to his muse-of-the-moment or weaving a heartfelt commentary on the chaos and political instability the world is facing in his spring/summer 2017 collection, the founder and creative eye of Christian Dada has the uncanny ability to channel his thoughts and emotions into meticulously crafted pieces; a rarity in the over-saturated streetwear scene.
"For this collection, I started off with my primary wish of world peace. Paradoxically, military clothes [are a] symbol of peace to me," Morikawa shared. Such idealistic messaging manifested in vests embroidered with regal military insignia — best lopped over a crisp oxford shirt — interspersed with lyrics borrowed from a music legend or two. 'Deep in the cell of my heart, there is another world. A better world', The Smiths famously crooned; the quote is given new life across this season's raw-edged shirts.
Along with Morikawa's hope for a better world came a sense of nostalgia, for which those who crave the human touch in the thick of mass produced fashion will find the hand-embroidered sartorial statements a worthy investment. "We worked with an atelier established by a Japanese embroider who graduated from Lesage. It is made like a sculpture where all the beads [are laid] onto the garment [and] sewn together by hand individually so that each bead has a different angle — creating a three-dimensional effect to it."
The unparalleled expertise of Lesage — considered by many to be the mecca of embroidery and is also enlisted by Chanel for their Métier D'art shows — is what elevates a collection from casual street cred smashing to experimental pieces the contemporary pensive gent should want to own.
