Carine Roitfeld talks style, dressing up and her close relationship with Tom Ford
How did you first meet Tom Ford?
He really wanted to meet me. Mario Testino and I were doing a lot of jobs together. I think he liked our style and really tried hard to meet us. At that time he was with Gucci and we thought what would we do with Gucci. So he came to visit us in a studio in the middle of summer and I remember the first thing Mario and I thought was how gentle, sexy and nice he was. It was simply because of that that we decided to work with him.
After working for more than 10 years with Tom, we've become really close and we're both very similar. We are both Virgos. We love the same idea of a woman, and to Tom I was kind of a female version of him.
How would you describe your personal style?
I have quite a classic style. I would say classic with an edge — very bourgeois with a bit of rock and roll attitude. A cross between Patti Smith and Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour. I always think about Coco Chanel and what she would have said to herself every time she looked at the mirror before leaving her apartment or hotel room at the Ritz. I think she would have asked herself, "Is there's something too much about my look. Can I take something off?" I'd prefer to rather take something off than to add.
What is your favourite colour?
Black. But I like to mix it with khaki.
What fashion item should every woman own?
If it has to be one, I would say black stilettos. I own many pairs with different heel heights. I like the same things. I've worn the same skirt style by Rick Owens. When I like something, I repeatedly buy that same thing because I know I'm going to wear it a lot. High heels, skirts, tight sweaters and tights are almost like my uniform. Another important thing to me and maybe it's my French taste, but I like to start the day dressing up with lingerie. It's always the first fashion piece I wear. Believe it or not — it drives the clothes choices I make.
Who is your style icon?
I don't have anyone in particular. For me, it's all about the attitude and mixing. Patti Smith for her attitude. I like Catherine Deneuve and Diana Vreeland is a genius. There are many different people that inspire me, not just one.
Which city is the most stylish in your opinion?
You can find incredible people in different cities. I was just in London and I noticed how they colour their hair in shades of dark green to light pink. You will never see French girls dyeing their hair that way. In America, they are more polished. In France, it's about the attitude.
