Orchard Road has been Singapore's most renowned shopping destination from the 1970s till this very day. It spans almost 2.2km and has malls and shopping complexes both above and below ground, stretching out as far as the eye can see. It's chock full of retail, dining and entertainment options; and, to the untrained eye, one would think that only international luxury and high-street brands exist in this retail paradise.

But where's the local fashion? What about independent stores? What if you want to shop for original labels that can only be found in Singapore or the region?

Well, look no further. Here's our guide to the best local labels and independent stores along Orchard Road.

Familiar with the feeling of walking into a store not needing anything but leaving with almost one of everything? That's Naiise for you. Stocked with a mind-boggling variety of goodies in it's spacious Orchard Gateway boutique, think of it as your one-stop shop for anything from homeware to stationery and clothing. Plus, a selection of jams and sauces that's an introduction to our city's spectrum of local flavours.

Threadbare & Squirrel
Hoping that you'll wear their clothes till they're threadbare, this multi-label store stocks several standout local labels, especially when it comes to their accessory offerings. Some of our favourite local brands from Threadbare & Squirrel include: 20:TwoThree for their unique design detailing; max.tan who makes a great case for an all-black wardrobe and; Mandy Wu, whose edgy leather and metallic accessories always make a statement. Thursdays and Fridays are the best days to swing by as that's when new items come in.

In Good Company
In just under a year, In Good Company's Ion boutique has become the go-to spot for shoppers on the hunt for minimalistic yet individualistic staples. The sprawling space judiciously decorated with the bare minimum — uncluttered racks sorted by colour — makes it that much easier to zero in on the perfect piece. The plus point? The store also carries a selection of fabric care products by eco-conscious Aussie label, Mr. Black. And, if you're peckish from all that shopping, grab a bite within their space by way of Café by Plain Vanilla housed in-store.

Ocdempire.com Official Offline Store
Ocdempire.com's offline store is undeniably the haunt for cool kids. Retailing a host of streetwear clothing — such as Korean label Nonagon (by YG Entertainment) and UK purveyor of distressed basics, Represent — that's also available on their online e-tailer, the good people behind Ocdempire.com have launched their brick-and-mortar outlet to cater to customers who can't forgo indulging in touch, feel, and fit before biting the bullet. Also, the raw, industrial set-up they've nailed at their Orchard Gateway store can't hurt.

Beyond The Vines
Previously boasting a whitewashed woody interior marching to their beat of modern simplicity, local brand Beyond The Vine's newly renovated store at Mandarin Gallery is ripe for store-goers to indulge in a multi-sensory experience. After its makeover, its inviting colour palette of the softest pink and mustard contrasted with stone finishings is anchored by the gentlest notes of their original scent concoction. Browse the racks of clean staples, but do also take a moment to appreciate the terrarium installations by local botanical artist, Charles Loh

10. Tangs at Tang Plaza
Tangs is a department store and the only one included in this list of independent shops, but it made the cut because of its storied reputation — it was the first of its kind to open up on Orchard Road. That, and its strong history of supporting local design since the '80s. Tangs continues to stock a wide array of Singapore's best homegrown brands with international labels mixed in. Our favourites include: Matter and Elohim by Sabrina Goh for womenswear, for their individualistic voices that bucks the trend out there; Carrie K.'s thoughtfully designed jewellery; and, their recent addition of Australian high street labels C/Meo Collective, Finders Keepers, The Fifth Label and Keepsake.
