The inspiration: Following the tranquil seaside affair complete with rhythmic waves projected on the backdrop of the runway last season, Max Mara took it up a couple of notches and out to sea this spring/summer. Nautical stripes, star motifs and rope prints led the way.
The hair and makeup: Open sea debauchery on deck switched out the usual coiffed elegance of the Max Mara woman for slicked back faux-mullets and red eyeshadow that extended beyond the brows. It's hard to keep the hair on fleek between walking the plank and all that sea spray.
I spy: Flared trousers that aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and intentionally misbuttoned jackets and coats — talk about beauty in imperfection.
Try this now: Rope accessories. Take cues from the Italian brand's runway where their signature JBags were slung over the shoulder not with leather straps, but ropes. Our next pet project: Trading up our boring black camera straps for sand-hued rope.
Favourite look: The print-on-print cape and trousers streamlined by a sheer skin-tight body suit (look 42). The gutsy ensemble reminded us of a modern day monochrome Ziggy Stardust minus the hair. Where was that model's faux-mullet?
