5 labels to refresh your summer wardrobe
Specialises in: Avant-garde beachwear and swimsuits
Founded by: Adriana Degreas, who set out to break the archetypal tropical summerwear aesthetic in Brazil
What you need to know: Drawing inspiration from her grandmother's wardrobe and expertise from her grandfather's fabric factory, Degreas blurs the lines between ready-to-wear and beachwear.
2. IBO MARACA
Specialises in: Handcrafted and hand-painted straw hats
Founded by: Mother and daughter duo Effie and Christina, of which the former was born in Venezuela and raised in Greece
What you need to know: Every hat Ibo Maraca purveys is woven by hand from toquilla straw in Ecuador, a task requiring eight hours. It is then hand-painted by Grecian artists who create one-of-a-kind illustrations for each piece. Ibo Maraca also provides custom hat-painting services.
Specialises in: Woven Colombian Wayuu bags
Founded by: Sophie Anderson, who chanced upon the skilled weavers in Colombia on a trip in 2011
What you need to know: After sharing her finds with friends and family, Anderson then went on to collaborate with weavers to produce exclusive designs for her label. Starting out with a partnership with three artisans, the brand now works with more than 750 weavers from the Wayuu ethnic group.
4. SANAYI 313
Specialises in: Handcrafted embroidered mules and sandals
Founded by: Brothers Amir and Enis. Their backgrounds are in business and interior design respectively.
What you need to know: Combining their expertise and founding lifestyle store Sanayi 313 in Istanbul, the brand's elaborately embroidered mules hit home with the fashion pack. But that's not all it has to its name. The space also houses Amir and Enis' love for food — with a fully operational kitchen within — and architecture, offering made-to-measure furniture and home decor.
Specialises in: Vibrant embroidered resortwear, a tapestry of cultures
Founded by: Designer Ayah Tabari in 2013 who hails from Palestine, grew up in Amman and Riyadh, and is now based in Dubai
What you need to know: Mochi conceptualises its collections by locales, not seasons. Offering eight ranges inspired by the tradition and artisans in Palestine, Morocco, Jaipur, Thailand, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Spain and Africa, each collection weaves the tales and history of its culture into a summer-ready wardrobe.
