Gucci makes a statement of a different kind with Coco Capitán

Common sense

Just when you thought Gucci can't get any cooler, Coco Capitán happened

Applause [uh-plawz] noun: The sound of people clapping their hands repeatedly to show enjoyment or approval of something; a common reaction to anything Alessandro Michele puts out on the runway.

The latest exhibit: Gucci's fall/winter 2017 show in Milan. In his audio review of the said collection, editor-in-chief Norman Tan named the GUCCI '70s sweatband (hells yes!) as his favourite accessory. Other winners? Those black leather dungarees; sceptres (a.k.a. walking canes); and the vintage Gucci tees made over by the statement-making graffiti of Spanish artist and photographer, Coco Capitán.

Two of Capitán's signature aphorisms were on display among Michele's overwhelming 119 looks on the runway. The first, worn over a millennial pink silk turtle neck and shimmering Aladdin trousers; the second, layered under a contrast stitch navy men's jacket with sandy lapels.

Aside from the "I want to go back to beliving a story" T-shirt donned by the designer during his brief end-of-show bow, it's easy to see how Capitán's sayings were missed in the line-up. What a fashion shame. So, here, we are shining a spotlight on her child-like scribbles to show them off in full frontal glory.

Michele's go-to phrase is printed on a selection of red, black, white and mustard leather accessories (totes, backpacks, bum bags) and ready-to-wear garments (sweatshirts, T-shirts, hoodies, knits, coats). Can't handle the intentional misspelling? Us neither, so we'll be opting for the other mantras: "What are we going to do with all this future", recently seen on a 2,500-square-foot wall on New York City's Lafayette Street; "Common sense is not that common", also dressing a large wall in Corso Garibaldi in Milan; and, an appropriate sentiment for a vintage-loving label, "Tomorrow is now yesterday".

These Gucci x Coco Capitán pieces are sure to run out faster than Bieber tour tickets — but without the heartache and devastation of abrupt cancellation — so be sure to head down to your nearest Gucci store stat.
