1. His real name is Kuok Meng Jun.
The 27-year-old got his moniker from the initials of his brothers and him, who were a huge influence and taught him how to sing and play the guitar since he was eight.
2. He's lived in Hong Kong, the UK and the US.
The Singapore-born musician was shipped off to boarding school in the UK at the age of 12, before majoring in communications and digital media studies at Stanford University. At Palo Alto, his college friends and him created a new social network which catered specifically to university students. He sold it and went into advertising and real estate development in Hong Kong for three years.
3. He was a finalist in Singapore Idol.
Participating and eventually reaching the finals of Singapore Idol season three in 2009, MMXJ withdrew from the competition due to personal reasons after being voted into the top 13.
4. Alesso is a huge inspiration to him.
According to an interview, Alesso's Years (2012) was one of his most inspirational records. MMXJ first saw him live at Coachella, and dubs the Swedish producer's approach to songwriting as "emotional" and "uplifting". It was that song that inspired him to learn how to produce dance music.
5. He's pretty chummy with Gentle Bones.
MMXJ collaborated twice with local singer-songwriter Gentle Bones (real name: Joel Tan) on his 12-track debut album, Into The Wild, which was released on 27 November last year. His singles Kings (feat. Gentle Bones) and Into The Wild (feat. Mae Sta) were both co-written by Gentle Bones.
