Not one to slow down, '80s music icon Grace Jones is poised to dominate Bali’s Potato Head Beach Club this weekend. Before heading to the tropical isle, we look back at the living legend’s 5 kick-ass moments
1. That time she whacked a chat show host — while live on air The 1981 slapping outburst, which Jones unleashed on TV host Russell Harty, is one that the world would never forget. Case in point: Despite having happened more than 30 years ago, it's the first thing that comes up when you search "Grace Jones" on Youtube. The cheeky clip sees the music icon pout and protest when Harty gives her the cold shoulder — but not for long. 2. That time she hung out in Paris and then hung off the Eiffel Tower Jones may have partied with Karl Lagerfeld and Giorgio Armani in Paris nightclubs, but the former Bond girl did a different kind of hanging out around the Eiffel Tower in A View to a Kill. Climbing up the monument with 007 in hot pursuit, she leapt off the top and soared through the air in a black cape that beat Batman's by a mile.
3. The countless times she put on her birthday suit Forget Miley Cyrus, this disco queen is the epitome of absolute raunch. Whether she's hula-hooping completely topless throughout the entirety of Slave to the Rhythm or earning a spot on Disneyland's banned-for-life list for daring to go bare, Grace Jones is no prude. 4. That time she blasted RiRi for copying her "Rihanna... she does the body-painting thing I did with Keith Haring, but where he painted directly on my body, she wears a painted bodysuit. That's the difference. Mine is on skin; she puts a barrier between the paint and her skin," says Jones in her autobiography I'll Never Write My Memoirs, "I don't even know if she knows that what she's doing comes from me, but I bet you the people styling her know. They know the history." 5. And Yeezy too The artist has slammed everyone from Lady Gaga to Kim Kardashian for not challenging the status quo enough, or do anything that she hasn't done already (well, you're quite an act to top, Ms. Jones), but her beef with Kanye West was the one that set her fire ablaze. Claiming the rapper stole a video idea from her, she told New York Times, "When I see him, honestly, I'm going to get in his face." Be afraid, Yeezy. Grace Jones will perform live at Potato Head Beach Club, Bali, on 8 October. To purchase tickets, visit Potato Head Folk Singapore or click here. For last week's #WomanCrushWednesday, click here.
