The Captain Planet edition
Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Heart: All the components you need to summon Captain Planet the cartoon hero. But for Captain Planet the DJ, it takes an opulent creative space to bring out the artistry in him. The New York-based up and coming DJ has remixed for stars such as Little Dragon and Erykah Badu, as well as made himself heard in soundtracks for shows such as Orange is the New Black. A fan of Afro beats, you can plug into his Afro-Latin selections on Wednesdays at Hotel Vagabond, a new boutique hotel nestled in between the enclaves of Kampong Glam and Little India. Captain Planet also spins at the hotel's bar on Fridays and Saturdays.
To start a party, the DJ recommends Love Taps' Back for More. "It's one of my favourite secret weapons of the year," he says. "It's such a great warm-up track to get people dancing while their makeup hasn't smudged yet."
For a chilled yet haunting throwback to Michael Jackson's heyday, check out La Mecánica Popular's Noche Triler. "This is the closest we're going to get to Michael Jackson today, by this psychedelic retro-Latin group based in Brooklyn," he recommends.
For a healthy dose of reggae, Zed Bias is your man. "I have a real weakness for reggae vocalists on top of grimey UK beats, and this one featuring Stylo G & Scrufizzer definitely hits that sweet spot," he continues.
Finally, from something from the man himself, check out Aguacero, his track with Chico Mann. To be officially released worldwide on 30 October via Bastard Jazz Recordings, Captain Planet tells us it's guaranteed to get your hips moving. It's time to turn it up.
Captain Planet spins at Vagabond Bar in Hotel Vagabond (39 Syed Alwi Road) from Wednesdays to Saturdays from 9pm to 3am.
