1. He's a warm-hearted softie who saves pups and kitties in distress
McConaughey isn't merely an on-screen hero as how you've see him in the epic sci-fi Interstellar or his upcoming Civil War drama Free State of Jones — he's a real life gem too. The actor worked alongside a veterinarian to rescue over 50 pets that were left behind in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In 2006, he rescued a cat from a gang of juveniles, who were attempting to set the poor hairspray-doused animal on fire. Naturally, McConaughey wasn't "alright, alright, alright" with this — he swiftly jumped out of his vehicle to save the feline.
2. But he named his pet dog BJ...
The heartthrob undoubtedly has his flippant side on check. His canine best friend — who goes on occasional runs on the beach with him (#jealous) — is named BJ. Former co-star Jennifer Garner has helped clarify that the name doesn't stand for Billy Joe: "He has a dog named BJ and it stands for what you think it stands for". Cheeky.
3. Rumour has it, he was strongly considered for Titanic's Jack Dawson role
What would Titanic be like if McConaughey had been Jack Dawson and never let go? McConaughey cleared the rumour up in one of his speeches. "I did not get offered the lead role in Titanic, as it has been rumoured I did," he mentioned. He then cast a look to his agent, saying "I didn't get an offer, right? Because if I did, we need to talk."
4. He was voted "Most Handsome" in his senior year of high school
Because of course he did. We present you, this vision of a twenty-something McConaughey:
5. He flirts with grandmas — even Jessica Chastain's
Chastain — McConaughey's Interstellar co-star — caught the actor red handed during a screening where she brought her family along. "My grandmother was vibrating, she was so excited," Chastain remarked in a talk with McConaughey. "She was ready to jump his bones and you [McConaughey] were so generous. You posed for like, 12 photos. And you flirted with her like I've never seen before!"
