One to watch: With Eric Khoo's In The Room as his first international project, we introduce you to South Korean indie star Choi Woo-shik
Who: Choi Woo-shik, 25.
From: South Korea, before his family moved to Vancouver, Canada when he was 10.
Kimchi bombs: After being ostracised by his Canadian schoolmates for bringing kimchi in his lunchbox, he told his mother not to pack it in anymore. But his mother forced him to — "It was kind of like a bomb", he recalls.
First start: During his freshman year in college, Choi dropped all his arts courses and flew to Korea specifically for an audition with an entertainment company, but didn't get the part initially.
Accolades: Since he started his acting career in 2010, he's won Best New Actor at the 35th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, Actor of the Year at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and Best Newcomer at the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Singapore story: You'll see him in Eric Khoo's erotic thriller In The Room, where he plays one half of a pair of best friends sharing a hotel room. We caught the film last week, and it's sexual tension abound as Choi plays the "friendzoned" character who yearns to be intimate with his female best friend, played by fellow Korean indie darling Kim Kkobbi.
Look forward to: Busan Bound, a thriller about mutants; and Marital Harmony, a period romantic comedy piece.
