Here are 5 things you need to know about Ultra 2017's latest addition, Brian Immanuel a.k.a. Rich Chigga, the maverick Internet sensation from Indonesia
1. He's born and raised in the archipelago of Asia Contrary to popular belief, Brian Immanuel has nothing to do with California nor was he raised in America. The Indonesian teen formerly only knew how to speak his native tongue — Bahasa Indonesia — and had only picked up English from watching comedy sitcoms later in his teen years. Who says television isn't educational?
2. Music runs in the family Having musically talented siblings — his sister's a singer while his brother's a producer — to look up to must have fueled the passion in young Immanuel. Although he's only 17, in the words of the famous New York rapper Cam'ron, "His spit was dope and his flow was tough".
3. He's also a former comedian Immanuel started his online presence in dark comedic skits. Now, the millennial pink polo tee and Reebok fanny pack-wearing teen in the viral 'Dat $tick' music video would rather be known as a rapper than a comedian. He wants his comedy to be a by-product of his rap persona, like Tyler the Creator.
5. Everyone wants a piece of him His second music video, 'Dat $tick' received over 4.5 million views on YouTube, earning a seal of approval from the hip-hop icon, Ghostface Killah of Wu-Tang Clan, who did a remix. As the rising star gains popularity from L.A to Asia, his recent song 'Gospel' roped in Keith Ape of "It G Ma". He's even seen brushing shoulders with Pharrell Williams and Post Malone.
