It's time to step into the dark side. Even Kylie Jenner will be launching a black matte Lip Kit called Dead of Knight in her ultra-popular Lip Kit series on 10 June. Dark lips, ranging from deep blues to plums to even black shades are fresh, modern and edgy. But when wearing these dark shades, proper application is key. Here are our top tips, plus some recommended colours to saturate your lips in these midnight hues. Pick a hue, any hue, and get started.
ALWAYS START WITH GOOD PREP
If you have dry and flaky lips, you might want to do a pre-scrub to get rid of dry skin. Use a good lip conditioning balm before you attempt this look. And dab away any excess so that the lip is not too slick. This is especially important if you're going for a matte lip look, as any cracks and lines on the lip will look super obvious on an intense, dark hue.
INVEST IN A FLESH TONED LIP PENCIL
Why a flesh-toned pencil? This can help perfect your lip shape and create a defined outline that makes it easier to apply your dark lip. After drawing around the lip contours, use a concealer brush to blend it out so there are no harsh lines. This pencil will also come in handy when you need to clean up mistakes — such as lipstick that's gone out of the lip line — and prevent the colour from bleeding. The last thing you want with these dramatic hues is smeared lipstick around your mouth — that might look like anything from poisoned berries to chocolate stains.
LIP PENCILS ARE THE EASIEST TO USE
Although they can be a little drying (hence the need to start with a good balm), a lip pencil is the easiest way to apply a dark lip quickly and precisely. Line the lips (even them out so they look symmetrical) and then fill in with colour in the entire lip. To intensify the colour or create a creamier effect, apply your lipstick or liquid lipstick over with a lip brush. For the two-tone look (as above), choose a deeper colour and apply it in the inner portion of the lips for a 'just bitten' effect.
USE A CLEAR GLOSS TO TURN A MATTE LIP SHINY
If you want a slick and shiny effect (as above), simply use your regular lip pencil or lipstick and top off with a layer of clear gloss. This will give shine without tampering with or altering the colour of your original lippie.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE REST OF YOUR MAKEUP
The coolest way to wear this dark lip look IRL is with minimal makeup — just polished skin and strong brows. This trend is all about the lip, so you don't want heavy eye makeup or blusher competing with this look. That said, don't skimp on the concealer or the foundation, as the dark lip will amplify the look of undereye circles and any marks or blemishes.
