Trending now: Smudged liner at the 2016 CFDA Awards
Models and actresses of the moment took the words smoking hot quite literally this year. The subtly smudged liner look was trending in a big way at the CFDA Awards, and no wonder. Not only was it able to bring out individual eye colours — from green to blue to brown — it also makes the wearers look extra sexy and mysterious. The best part of the trend is that it requires mainly two pieces of makeup: kohl liner and mascara. Also great is the varying degrees of intensity and smudginess, that can be customised according to your needs.
For a subtle approach, take a leaf from American model Jacquelyn Jablonski's book. Her gorgeous hazel green peepers are intensified by a touch of chocolate brown liner. Jablonski told Into The Gloss that she loved wearing liner and then going into the shower to achieve that lived-in and smudged effect, which she then cleans up with concealer. When worn in the inner rims of the lower lashes, as on Christina Ricci and Elizabeth Olsen, liner takes on that rock n' roll spin. Just add tonnes of mascara and don't worry too much if it smudges. Emily Ratajkowksi's liner look is a bit more complicated, as she's added highlights of soft gold in the inner corners of the eyes, as well as smokiness on the lids. But the sultry result is well worth the extra minutes. Finally, for a big impact like Jessica Chastain, go black. An intensely pigmented black kohl liner on the upper and lower lids, with a touch of light grey shadow is the makeup equivalent of a black tux for the ladies: classic, sexy, and with a hint of rule-breaking charm.
