5 beauty tips we learnt from the Victoria's Secret 2017 show
Earn your wings

You've probably seen all the photos of the 2017 Victoria's Secret show. And you're probably familiar with the quintessential 'Angel' look — tumbling waves, glowing, sunkissed skin and natural but strategically perfected makeup. But don't be fooled by the effortlessness that these gorgeous women convey with practiced ease — a whole lot of effort goes into this signature beauty look. The brand even engages top makeup and hair gurus Tom Pecheux and Anthony Turner to get the Angels looking otherworldly. Here's what we've learnt from looking through the backstage photos.
A LITTLE SHIMMER NEVER HURT ANYONE
With emphasis on the word little. Because of the lights and cameras trained on them, the models need strategically-placed shimmer on the eyes and gloss on the lips, but not too much highlight, or they can look like disco balls on heels. Pecheux has certainly wielded his makeup brush with restraint sticking with the signature neutral shades like khaki, peach, nude and mauve to bring a certain softness to the whole look, while the highlight and contour is also balanced with the rest of the features.
EVEN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANGELS NEED EXTENSIONS (SOMETIMES)
Why so glum Bella Hadid? Maybe it's because the currently bobbed Hadid needs extensions for thickness and length and to create that signature VS halo. So the next time you envy the perfect, bouncy waves of the Angels, know that many of the models need a bit of help in that department and some may not even be wearing their real hair.
PICK THE RIGHT FALSIES FOR YOUR EYE SHAPE
While this was not the first time that Victoria's Secret has featured Asian models — Liu Wen was the first to earn her wings in 2009 — this year seven Chinese models walked the runway. Pecheux and his makeup team's skill was shown in the way he translated the signature look to the women of colour that walked the show. For models like Ming Xi who had a distinct almond-shaped eye, the falsies focussed more on the corner of the lashes, but did not overwhelm the eyes. Meanwhile bombshell Angel Adriana Lima, who is known for her sultry stare, went all out with fuller lashes.
BLEACHING YOUR HAIR CAN MAKE IT LOOK BRITTLE
Call us Captain Obvious, but seeing Karlie Kloss with silvery, platinum hair as an Angel made us realise that it can make one look washed out and also emphasise a less than voluminous mane. While Kloss' new colour, which she has been sporting since July this year, looks very 'fashion' in editorials, maintenance is a must if you want to rock this shade IRL. Also platinum looks better on thicker hair. Period.
CURL HAIR AWAY FROM THE FACE FOR THE PERFECT ANGEL 'DO
Model Taylor Hill has great, thick hair but what makes her tresses look especially good is the way it has been curled in S-shaped waves, away from her face. This will take some practice with the curling iron in front of the mirror, but once you've got down the right direction of each wave you'll be able to achieve this angelic effect. If you lack volume, go for a side part like Hill's and always finish off with a fine mist of hairspray to hold the style in place.
