Dior's new La Collection Privée scent is inspired by a château
To the manor born
La Colle Noire is not just any château, it was acquired by designer Christian Dior in 1951. Situated in Montauroux, not far from Grasse, today the property has been lovingly maintained, down to the replanting of the same centifolia roses — that bloom only in May — that Mr Dior so loved. Building on the idea of the May rose, perfumer François Demachy said, "With the 'La Colle Noire' perfume, I wanted to pay tribute to a place that is important not only to the house of Dior, but also to me personally, as the Pays De Fayence is a region I know very well. I wanted to express all of its warmth and beauty as well as its ardour. It is a micro-valley where the mistral blows, and is either very hot, or very cold. The May rose is the fruit of all this."
The exquisite fragrance is an unexpectedly spicy and woody scent that centres upon this bloom. Other notes include sandalwood, amber, spice and musk as well as an exotic touch of Magadascan clove essence. Says Demachy, "La Colle Noire celebrates the May rose blended with spices, wood, amber and musk. The Grasse rose is unique, piquant and potent. It is never insipid; it expresses all the raw and radiant beauty of this region."
