Luscious lips are always in, but achieving a good lip look is not just a matter of putting on your lipstick. Even the best lipsticks and trendiest shades will look lacklustre on dry, chapped and discoloured lips. While a voluptuous pout like Amanda Seyfried's can look sensual and youthful, ageing causes our lips to thin, look duller and lose their definition.
The delicate skin on your lip also needs extra care, as unlike the face, no natural oil is produced there. Therefore your lips can't maintain moisture. This explains why they're the first areas to get dry and cracked in temperate climates. Want beautiful kissers? Here are our tips.
1. Resist the urge to lick those lips
Yes what your mother told you was true. If you are constantly licking your lips because they feel dry, do note that your saliva contains enzymes that are meant to break down food. That same enzyme coating the lips... not so good. Try a quality lip balm or vaseline instead. And keep your hands off any peeling skin!
2. Drink up
No we aren't talking about mojitos on Ladies' Night. It sounds dead simple, but skin needs hydration, and specifically water, to keep it optimised and functioning well especially in hot and dry weather — think Europe in the summer. If you suffer from chapped and peeling lips, try making sure you consume at least two litres of water a day.
3. Start with a scrub
While you can invest in a lip-specific scrub, you can easily make one at home. Blend brown sugar with a dash of honey for an effective (and yummy) lip exfoliating treatment. We like using a baby toothbrush — it has super soft bristles that are gentle. But be sure never to overscrub or you might tear the skin.
4. Always finish with a lip serum
Lips should be treated just like the skin on the rest of your face. So if you are slathering on facial oils and massaging your face daily, but ignoring your lips completely, it's time to raise your lip game. Try a super-hydrating specialist product like Clé de Peau Beauté Lip Serum, that infuses your pout with powerful conditioning and moisturising ingredients. The serum contains Mangosteen and Baker's Yeast extract to hydrate skin as well as ingredients that boost collagen production and circulation for a plumper and rosier pout.
Massage the serum into your lips with the metal-tipped applicator to give them instant hydration and voluptuousness. We like that it can be worn day or night, under lipstick or as a nightime treatment and that it works beyond the lip surface — so the skin on your kissers improves over time.
Eyes on the prize
And if you're taking care of your lips, complement your lip care routine with an eye-specific product like the Clé de Peau Beauté Intensive Eye Contour Cream that not only hydrates the eye area, but works on the tone, contours and texture of the skin there.
With its platinum massager, the cream instantly brings radiance to the skin around your peepers. With eyes and lips that sparkle with vitality, you'll look good even before you start on your makeup.
