S&X: The provocative new perfume by Rankin and The Perfumer's Story by Azzi
We've heard about sex in a bottle, but the question is would you want to smell of it? Niche pefume houses like Etat Libre D'Orange has tried it with its infamous Secretions Magnifiques, and now acclaimed fashion photographer Rankin brings his take with this unique collaboration with perfumer Azzi Glasser. Glasser has created bespoke perfumes for high-profile clients like Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Noomi Rapace in the past along with creating scents for the properties owned by hotelier Andre Balazs. She recently launched her fragrance line, The Perfumer's Story by Azzi, in October last year. Says Glasser, "My fragrance compositions are based on 'character and style' each with an artistic story and reference. I have been fortunate to have worked over the years with so many incredible personalities that herald their unique style. I could see there was a demand for fragrances to be more individual with a real spice of originality. I wanted to create the ultimate finishing touch that would be adored by others, totally loyal to the wearer and evoke memories for years to come."
S&X, a scent inspired by the photography of Rankin, a famed portrait and fashion photographer who has shot everyone from David Bowie to Jay Z, proved to be a unique challenge. “I wanted to capture the smell of S&X as if it was taken through the eyes of Rankin and his lens, creating and producing his scented vision as a DNA print through my nose.”
Describing the scent Glasser says, “Provocative, fearless and wild, S&X combines a hedonistic symphony of notes that tell the story of the touch of bodies, the beauty of skin on skin and above all lasting memories." Glasser's description mirrors what Rankin has said about the honesty depicted in his own portraits, “It’s fleeting desire captured in an image. It’s not falling in love, but it’s like falling in love. It’s not sex, but it’s like sex. It’s a relationship compressed into a moment.” The fragrance notes include jasmine, leather, earl grey tea, white musk and patchouli.
Rankin also provides us the interesting link up between sight, smell and our other senses. He says, “As a photographer and director, I work in a world of sight and sound. Quite often my subject matter can involve touch and taste, (whether risqué or innocently). So smell can feel like the forgotten sense. Yet it is one that totally fascinates me. I’ve always loved fragrances and have wanted to do one for years. When I met Azzi, we just hit it off. We approach what we do in very similar ways: getting to know our subjects, tapping into their personalities and how they want to present themselves to the world. In the same way I aim to capture life in a single moment, so does Azzi. I am fascinated by how she took the more suggestive, sensorial aspects of photography and bottled them. S&X is provocative, naughty and humorous. I love it.” If you want a sniff of this, you'll have to head down to London where it launched exclusively at Harvey Nichols in October before wider release next year. It's also available on The Perfumer's Story by Azzi website, but only ships within the United Kingdom.
