Why Sisley renovated its best-selling cream
If you're a fan of luxury skincare brand Sisley, you'll know its star products including the Sisleÿa Global Anti-Âge — which has remained its best-selling, anti-ageing product for 17 years. Now, after 10 years of research, the Sisleÿa L'Intégral Anti-Âge is here. The new product is an updated formula that works not just on intrinsic and extrinsic ageing, but on signs of behavioral ageing, or epigenetics as well.
Yes, even if you have the best genes, behaviours and emotions — like sun exposure and keeping a poor diet — can significantly affect how rapidly you age. To address this, the brand has added new complexes and ingredients to its anti-ageing cream to address the factors that are affected by epigenetics: cellular rhythm, energy and longevity. We speak to Nicolas Chesnier, the brand's regional managing director to find out more.
After 17 years, why update the cream now?
It's a bit awkward when you know the product is your number one anti-ageing product, it's still growing actually and is very successful. Normally we don't touch a product that is doing so well. In Sisley, we spend a lot of time reformulating products, but we're not a marketing-driven company, so we don't have a lot of reformulations.
However in global research, there has been findings about epigenetics (or behavioural ageing) over the past 10 years. We studied how behavioural ageing impacted overall ageing and it was significant. To us, this is the third dimension of ageing, so we had no choice, but to rework Sisleÿa. We worked on treating and taking care of behavioural ageing for a more all-round solution. We adjusted the formula so most of the actives have been kept, but some have been added. We have unique, loyal customers and we don't want to disappoint any of them.
Explain behavioural ageing to us
Before we used to focus just on protection of the genes. If you look at an analogy of a piano, all the keys represent your genes. An artist can play the piano and create a beautiful melody, but a non-pianist will not create the same expression or even touch the same keys. We've realised that it's the same with genes. You can have very high-quality genes, but the cells in your skin may not use these genes. Behavioural factors have a direct impact on the expression of genes. It is not just dependant on behaviour — such as whether you smoke or not — but also includes the diet and emotions. So even emotional shocks, like a sudden loss of someone — can lead to behavioural ageing. Your diet is also very important, as if you eat good food, like fruits and vegetables, it helps to fight oxidation.
What are some of the new ingredients?
There are three new complexes: lindera extract (to resynchronise cell rhythm), Persian acacia extract (to promote cell energy) and yeast and soyabean extract (to optimise cell longevity). The beauty is that one specific ingredient can have different extracts and different actions. Altogether we have more than 50 actives in this cream, although these are the ones we've chosen to highlight.
How long do you have to use it to see results?
After one month, and using this twice a day, you'll see spectacular results. You'll have much more collagen production and energy in the mitochondria of the cell. We have very high expectations as a brand, and we will not bring a product onto the market until it is ready. This is a very complete product, so if you start using it at a young age you will simply prolong your youthfulness.
