Inside The Beauty Candy Apothecary
The ultimate beauty and lifestyle emporium
After graduating from the Parsons School of Design, Astrie Sunindar-Ratner worked in fashion and PR in New York before opening her own store, The Beauty Candy Apothecary, in Cluny Court in Singapore. She has a passion for discovering beautiful things in unexpected places, which led her to create this exciting lifestyle concept store that sells not only hard-to-find cult beauty brands, but also lust-worthy accessories from brands such as Jennifer Behr as well as gorgeous stationery from the Rifle Paper Co., ensuring there's always something to pick up when you pop by.
What niche do you think The Beauty Candy Apothecary fulfils?
Beauty Candy was set up to introduce a hand-picked selection of hard-to-find and cult products into Singapore and South East Asia for the first time. My mission was, and still is, to spot the most exciting trends as they happen around the world and bring them to the market's attention via our different channels. Despite being a relatively young company, Beauty Candy has become the go-to source for information and inspiration on all things beauty.
How did you select the brands for your store?
I find brands mostly through my travels but I also read a lot of fashion and beauty magazines as well as blogs. If I see something that catches my eye, I usually do a bit of research about the history of the brand, try the products, see the packaging and, last but not least, check if they are available is Singapore or not. That's key to me as I like to be the first to introduce the brands here.
Explain to us your concept of a lifestyle emporium.
Beauty Candy Lifestyle curates an extensive assortment of lifestyle brands from beauty, home, accessories and fashion collections. Beyond carrying up-and-coming and cult products, Beauty Candy Lifestyle specialises in gifting services and creating bespoke gift sets.
Why did you have a juice bar in-house and what other interesting activities do you hold in your store?
The idea behind the juice bar was to complement our range of outer beauty products with an inner beauty concept, which juicing and cleansing represent. But in addition to that, I wanted to create something special in our store, and our small juice bar in the back is like a little hidden gem people in the know come for. That said, the juice bar has enjoyed tremendous success in its own right and we recently opened a stand-alone juice outlet in the CBD, so that worked out very well for us, too. We also have floral arrangement workshops for our customers.
What are some exciting brands that your store carries?
Tata Harper, Sacha Juan, Prtty Peaushun, Susanne Kaufmann, Morihata, Maison Balzac, Claus Porto and more new brands that are coming soon! I'm always on the lookout for something new.
What are some of your favourite products?
I like to unwind in a steaming-hot bath with Susanne Kaufmann Alkali Salt deacidifying as it provides holistic benefits for the entire body. It helps to reduce the acidity of the skin, promotes the elimination of waste products and sets blocked energies free. After my bath I slather on Tata Harper's Body Oil when my skin is still damp. I love using it before I go to bed, especially after a long day! Not only does my skin feel super soft the next day, but the scent is also relaxing so I also have a deeper sleep.
The Beauty Candy Apothecary is at #01-05B Cluny Court.
