Estée Lauder's newest spokesmodel Eva Mendes is quite a woman. As an actress, designer, mother and partner of actor Ryan Gosling, she now officially adds Estée Lauder model to her glittering resume, joining the likes of iconic beauties Paulina Porizkova and Elizabeth Hurley. The brand has chosen her, rather fittingly, to represent their New Dimension skincare range. And if you've admired Mendes' sculpted jawline and cheekbones on the big screen in movies like Hitch, you'll be happy to know the New Dimension collection consists of contouring and lifting products to help define your facial features.
The breakthrough New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum, contains a potent formula that not only re-contours, but also improves the volume and structure of the face in all the right places. The Expert Liquid Tape meanwhile is a red carpet secret of Eva Mendes'. Akin to slipping on a corset under a gown, not only does it give your key facial contours a tighter feel, it also firms and tones the face over time. There are also makeup products in the range, the Shape + Sculpt Face Kit and Eye Kit, that are designed to provide purely cosmetic enhancements to give you even more visible results. We find out from Mendes about the collection, her beauty routine and how her skincare habits have changed since becoming a mother.
Why did you want to work with Estée Lauder?
This is really a dream collaboration. I remember my first product so clearly — it was Estée Lauder's Knowing fragrance. I've loved it and have been wearing it ever since because, in my mind, it smells exactly like a woman should smell. It's a dream come true to be part of the Estée Lauder family and of such an iconic brand. When I was younger, Estée Lauder was the epitome of beauty and I grew up admiring the brand's iconic images. It was only later in life when I realized Estée Lauder is a brand for women, founded by a woman and run by women. I was raised by a single mother and two amazing sisters. I have a strong female support system around me. We all love and support each other. So it's very important for me to be part of a company that really celebrates and empowers women.
What does the concept of New Dimension represent to you?
I love the idea of transformation and the New Dimension skincare collection is all about transformation and empowering women to be in control of their own beauty. You can have a lot of fun with colour cosmetics, but where I really pay attention is what I put on my skin in terms of skincare. I love the fact that this new collection allows me to take control and transform how I want to see myself and how others see me.
What do you love most about New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum?
I'm drawn to products that have a great scent. If I don't like the smell of something, I can't have a relationship with it. And I love the smell of New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum. It's the rose and jasmine that draw me in. But then there's cucumber and melon and mandarin. I think it's amazing. Not to mention the results you actually see once you are using it. You can really tell a product is working when people start saying things to you like... "Your skin looks great, did you just get a facial?"
Any tips on how to apply the New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape?
I apply the Expert Liquid Tape where I want it — it's not for all over application. I put a little up on my cheekbones and jawline. Then I let it sit for a bit before applying the serum all over.
What do you do to look your best to show your best angle?
The camera is always a presence. When you're on the red carpet, you're being photographed from every angle, so you can't necessarily control what angle someone — or the world, really — sees you from. And, with social media today, all women can really relate to this. When you take a selfie with a girlfriend, you can't really control what she might post or who might see that picture. Every woman wants to put her best self forward. To be honest, New Dimension is really boosting my confidence. It helps to have the Expert Liquid Tape in your purse — whether you're on the red carpet or out with your girlfriends. When I use the tape, I really feel the tightening and see the results — so that helps me feel a bit more confident in front of the camera nowadays, a little bit more confident about my angles.
How has your beauty routine changed since becoming a mother?
I've always loved to have a ritual, something that I always do, no matter where I am. So since becoming a mother I'm still really diligent about my ritual, but it's just at different times of the day. Sometimes it's at four in the morning. Sometimes it's at two in the afternoon. I'm no longer on my own time. I don't have a nanny and I'm a very hands-on mom. But as tired as I am, I do find those few minutes, absolutely. I keep my ritual. I sneak those moments. The minute my daughter falls asleep for a nap or for the night, I'm just doing all my stuff.
When you have so many great roles coming to you, now that you're a mother do you have to put a filter on different opportunities?
I would love to do a comedy! Working with Wes Anderson would be amazing. I've been a fan of his films since Rushmore. Now that I have a family, I want to make sure that I'm having fun whenever I'm away working. I'd also love to do a play — a funny one like Larry David's A Fish in the Dark. I read that play early on before he took it to Broadway and I loved it.
The New Dimension Transformative Collection will be available at all Estée Lauder counters from September 2015.
