The great thing about Dr Mitchel Goldman is that he just tells it as it is: "I think it's rubbish! Men have always wanted to look good; it's not a new thing. It's something that the news media just want to say."
No filter, no dressing it up in niceties, just his unenamoured truth: "It's like, who wants to look bad?"
Exactly. No one.
In town for Calecim Professional — the globally patented skincare products containing stem cells harvested from the umbilical cord lining of red deers; and proudly developed here in Singapore — Dr Goldman is one of the world's leading experts in skin rejuvenation and aesthetic treatments. He is a board-certified dermatologist who serves as a member of over 30 professional societies; a medical consultant to companies the likes of Allergan, Merz and Galderma; author of some 14 medical textbooks on cosmetic and laser surgery; as well as an associate editor of numerous medical journals such as Dermatologic Surgery, Cosmetic Dermatology and Venous Digest. In summary, this man knows his skincare.
Recently appointed chairman of the Calecim Professional Medical Advisory Board, I sat down with the straight-talking doctor to discuss the latest trends in non-invasive skin treatments for men, the four ways to protect and rejuvenate skin, and why the newly launched Calecim Professional range of products is truly revolutionary.

There is an assumption that men are caring more about how they look now more than ever. Have you noticed that more men are looking into aesthetic procedures and skincare? Or have men always cared about their skin? We know from ancient times — from the Romans, from the Greeks, from the Renaissance — and through the ages, that men have always being particular about their looks. It's not just now. I have been a practicing dermatologist for 35 years, and I have always had about 10 percent of my patients as men. Men have always wanted to look better. But I think we are talking about men more because we now have procedures that men can do without down time. Guys don't want to take a week off because then they couldn't take care of their friends and family and be providers. Because men historically were the providers, so we had to work. Now we can do skincare procedures and use products that require very little, if any, downtime.
Can you give us an example? Okay, for instance, I'm 62 years old. I've had skin cancers and a lot of sun damage because I was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. I was on a boat all of my life. I was a water-skiing instructor. I was a cyclist. I'm always in the sun. But I didn't want to look old, I didn't want to have brown spots all over me, I didn't want to have wrinkles, so I've had procedures on myself. With advancements in technology, I can now have procedures with a variety of different lasers and energy devices — and still continue being a practicing dermatologist everyday — without taking any time off. And I can use skincare products with antioxidants and stem cell factor media everyday, to continue to look great, and also to protect my skin so I don't develop the cancers.
What are the most common procedures for men in your 35 years of experience? In addition to things like liposuction and hair transplants, when it comes to the skin, the most common procedures that I'm doing on men are tightening procedures. You can tighten the skin to have less of a jowly appearance and a younger, more youthful skin, with fractionated ultrasound called Ulthera, or bulk radiofrequency heating called Thermage. The latest one we're using in the United States, called Thermi RF, causes a tightening especially in the neck area.
And these are all non-invasive procedures? Well, non-invasive in the sense that we don't do it in hospitals. And you don't have to put someone under general anesthesia, and there is no blood and guts all over the place [laughs].
[Laughs] But you're still doing something under the surface... Yes, we're doing something. Everything we do is invasive — it just depends on the way we define 'invasive'. But certainly there is no cutting of the skin.
There is a general trend to no cutting now... The days of cutting are becoming behind us. Cutting is more of a barbaric way of trying to recapture your youth. The modern way of trying to recapture your youth is by doing non-cutting. So when I think of the word 'non-invasive', I think of non-cutting.
I have noticed that men are just as vain as women. But, you're right; they don't want to have that down time because they don't want to be seen as caring too much. Exactly.
"Men can maintain their youthfulness, and actually look even better, by using the Calecim products... It basically turns on the genes in your cells to try to recapture its youth"
But, in addition to these non-cutting treatments, there have been improvements in post-treatment skincare to help reduce down time by rapidly improving the rate of healing and rejuvenation. There are basically four ways to protect our skin and cause it to rejuvenate: The most important is sun protection by using sunscreens to block ultraviolet as well as environmental pollutants; second, antioxidants to quench free radicals and the damaging effects of environmental pollutants; third, hydration with products to plump up the skin and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles; but what's been revolutionary is the use of growth factor media. The first company to use growth factor media in skincare was a company that I founded 30 years ago called Skinmedica, Inc. — we were using fibroblast growth factors, which basically communicated to cells to turn on their 'youthfulness'.
What is different about Calecim Professional? It uses what is called mesenchymal growth factors harvested from the cord lining of red deer umbilical cords. Which means, instead of just talking to the fibroblast or epidermal growth factors — that is, just talking to the epidermis or adipose-derived growth factors; just talking to the fat — when you use mesenchymal growth factors from the cord lining, you are actually talking to everything all at once.
So it's truly holistic skin care? You're basically communicating with the entire skin to rejuvenate: With the fibroblast in the dermis to make more collagen elastic fibres; with the fat cells to make a healthier type of fat. So you are doing everything as the same time.
How can men use Calecim Professional in their daily routine? What I do is, after I shave in the morning, I put on the cream. It's as simple as that. It's part of my normal regiment. The reason why I love this product so much is that it feels good when you put it on. It also doesn't smell. It's just part of my rejuvenation strategy. And of course, I can't say it enough, the use of sun protection on top is also important.
What about for use in conjunction with skin procedures? I use the Calecim serum after skin procedures on men, and it takes away the stinging or burning sensation from the procedure. It also decreases what we call the 'bad inflammation' — so the excessive redness that can occur. And when we've done studies after procedures where we split the face into two — one half has placebo and the other half has Calecim serum — we noticed that the half with Calecim recorded almost double the healing time. It's a way of getting back to normal more quickly.
For someone that starts using Calecim as part of their normal daily regiment — not as part of post-treatment care — after how long would you expect them to see noticeable results? One of the major benefits of this product is the improvement that patients can see occurs fairly rapidly. Studies have shown that within two weeks, patients can start seeing an improvement. And that's actually quite rapid. In the older growth factor technologies, it took at least two months to see what we are seeing in just two weeks with Calecim. It truly is revolutionary.
So the take home point is to get onto Calecim now and use it daily? Yes. It basically turns on the genes in your cells to try to recapture its youth.
