Behind the makeup at AsNTM Cycle 3
As Asia's Next Top Model Cycle 3 draws to a close, the episodes of the season have gifted us with a backlog of beauty inspiration that we've been itching to try out. Throughout the cycle, the contestants contantly sported enviable looks (think: contemporary graphic eyes and bold, bright lips).
Here at Buro, we spoke to the show's head makeup artist, Beno Lim, on how to recreate these covetable looks.
We noticed that strong eyes are quite often the focus throughout the episodes, and we love the smoky and graphic eyes you've done. How can we recreate the look?
For eye-focused makeup, I primed with Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extend Eye Base. This helps eyeshadow adhere to lids, which then requires less touch-up. One quick way to achieve a smoky eye is to use a darker liner as a base. For a brown smoky eye, I first lined the eyes with Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Stubborn Brown and my favourite brown eyeshadows shades to use were Brun, Espresso, Concrete and Coquette. My go-to products to create a beautiful black smoky eye were the Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Engraved and the Matte Eyeshadow in Carbon. To blend, the #217 brush creates a soft blown-out effect.
For graphic eyes, the must-have tools are the #266 brush and Fluidline in Blacktrack. When extending the liner, make sure the end point of the eyeliner is aligned with the end point of the eyebrow. M.A.C's Fast Response Eye Cream doubles up as a quick-fix makeup remover — apply some to a small Q-tip and you have the perfect tool to ensure a clean, well-defined line.
Bold lips are also used quite often. What are the different factors that you consider when deciding to go bright or dark?
When it comes to selecting a lipstick, I like to first find out what the wardrobe will be like. Makeup is a part of fashion styling and it comes together to tell a full story. Where you are going? What image do you hope to portray? A red lip with smoky eyes is sexy and draws attention, but you can also explore going dark for a more impactful look. For a playful look for summer, I like to opt for brighter shades like Amplified Crème Lipstick in Morange.
What is your favourite look from the show?
Aside from the body painting episode, one of my favorite makeup looks for the show would be in Episode 9, where the models hung in mid-air dressed in Alex Perry gowns. I created a more dramatic, fantastical look for the contestants with a focus on the eyes. I used Fluidline in Blacktrack and Superslick Liquid Eye Liner in On The Hunt to create graphic lines and made use of crystals and reflective papers to add to the fantasy element.
Each episode is themed. Where did you take inspiration from in general?
For the AsNTM3 filming, I drew inspiration from Vogue magazines and the supermodels of the 90s like Stephanie Seymour and Christy Turlington. It is important for the makeup to complement each model's features to bring their best fashion face forward.
We love the strong cheekbones and contouring — it looks sharp without going overboard — in Episode 8. How did you straddle the fine line when creating the look?
My favorite products to contour are Bronzing Powders and Mineralize SkinFinish in Medium Dark. Using #126 brush to mix a little of both products, start beside the ear and buff the product gently downwards. Having good lighting is key to achieving a well-balanced contour so that you can see where the natural light and shadows hit the face. Another great way to perfect the contours would be to take a selfie of yourself and zoom in for a good look to ensure it's well-blended.
Recommend a quick and easy routine that's under five minutes for the lady that is always short of time.
If time is a constraint, you can use a multi-purpose base like M.A.C's Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF35 which is a sunblock, primer, and moisturising foundation all in one. Brows are so in trend — be sure to fill in your brows with Eye Brows in Brunette to frame your eyes. Most Asians tend to have straight lashes so I encourage curling and coating them with an Extended Play Gigablack Lash for a doe-eyed look. Wear a bright lipstick for a pop of colour as it will make you appear fresh. My favorite red is Retro Matte Lipstick in Relentlessly Red.
