We try a summer hair makeover at Backstage salon
Good hair ahead
If sitting for hours on end in a dinky hairdresser's chair only to emerge with less than desired results — or heaven forbid, with hair drier than tumble weed — is an all too familiar scenario for you, then it's high time you direct your attention to Backstage Hair Salon, where I recently headed for a summer hair makeover.
Nestled in the intersection between Killiney Road and Somerset Road, Backstage is a hair haven whose ambiance echoes minimalist zen-meets-woodland whimsy. Upon stepping in, I was greeted by smartly dressed individuals who ushered me into a plush seat, followed by an offer of a cool beverage of my choice. Creative stylist Raye Tan then dispensed with the fanfare as she got down to business, giving my head a good once-over to suss out the condition of my locks and determining the best cut to flatter my face shape. Professional to a T, she cleared her recommendations with me and ensured I was satisfied before starting with the scissors.
Now sporting a fresh trim I absolutely adore, an array of L'Oréal Professionnel hair colour catalogues were promptly laid out before me from which I chose a cool-toned, lavender blonde mixed with violet. Upping my dye job, I've also gone for an ombré at the very tips in a complementary ash grey shade. Yes, it is summer but who says you have to go the route of bright and bold? Folks who keep an eye on hairspiration will know that babylights is the way to go and cool pastels — think rose quartz and serenity, crowned by Pantone as the 'It' colours of 2016 — put a twist on yesteryear's bubblegum pastels.
With a collection of soft translucent browns and four cool pastel reflects of rose, lavender, mint and mineral, L'Oréal Professionnel's new Pastel Babylights colour series by Majirel will have you riding this trend with wearable, subtle, soft candy undertones that flatter Asian complexions. With my colour selection done, Raye and her team of stylists broke out the foil as my strands got sectioned off and bleached. Heat was applied to activate the bleaching agent for several minutes, and then I was whisked away for a quick rinse, shampoo and blow-dry before beginning the dyeing process proper.
With three stylists ringed around me meticulously applying the custom mixed dye solution through the layers of my hair, the process went by faster than usual. After letting it sit, I was back at the sink to wash out the dye (at which point I may or may not have succumbed to a short nap during the follow-up, soothing scalp massage). A quick towel dry later, the highlight of my hair appointment is unveiled in all its exclusive glory: The Kérastase Fusio-Dose — a tailor made, express treatment that reinvents luxurious haircare.
Backed by highly concentrated active ingredients that can be combined into multiple formulations to specifically target your personal hair concerns, Fusio-Dose is a unique tress-transforming super serum. Comprising of a two-step system with a concentrate and a booster, my personalised blend was a cocktail made up of the Concentré Oléo-Fusion — chockfull of nourishing natural oils for baby soft hair — and the pink hued Booster Brilliance, to enhance the radiance of my new colour.
A special delivery method via a firm twist of the tube deposits the booster into the concentrate base which caps off with a spritzer. Divvying up my hair into sections and layers, every strand is saturated with a liberal mist of Fusio-Dose that is labouriously kneaded in for maximum absorption. When the entirety of my head has been soaked in Fusio-Dose goodness, the concentrate is left on for seven minutes to fully sink in prior to the final rinse, shampoo and condition. One last blow-dry through my newly revived locks and I'm looking at healthy glowing hair that has never looked or felt better. Each swivel of my head has the soft ash-toned ombré peeking through among the gleaming strands of my lavender tinged hair. And though the cool tones are a big shift from my usual bias towards warm shades, this new look has got the seal of approval from friends and family.
Between the blinding lustre bestowed by the formula of the L'Oréal Professionel colour and the Fusio-Dose treatment, as well as the bouncy volume of my customised cut, Backstage and their team of expert stylists have catapulted my hair game into a new stratosphere — one that hair models inhabit. Proof of the performance that's Kérastase? Undeniably. Worthy of your time and investment? Definitely.
